Social Security identity theft, the most common SSA scenario

It’s hard to believe Social Security identity theft to be so common. You would think most people would know how to keep their social security numbers safe, right? Unfortunately, considering the number of complaints received by the Federal Trade Commission every year, that doesn’t seem to be the case FOR Social Security identity theft.

When identity thieves get their hands on someone’s social security number, they have all the information they need to turn your life into a living hell. Asking for “fake” ID documents, opening back accounts under your name… you name it! People don’t realize just how much can be done with the right set of information. And if you think that this is something that would never happen to you, just ask any of the millions of victims that filed complaints last year: I’m sure they’ll tell they thought Social Security identity theft would ever happen to them either!

If you read FTC’s guidelines on identity theft prevention, you’ll understand how important it is to keep your SSN safe. Don’t enter it unless you understand exactly why it is needed for. If you come across an online forum that ask you to enter it just so you can post a message; does that really make any sense? You’re the first (and often, the only) line of defense against this type of Social Security identity theft fraud. Keep your data safe.
